Overview of Argentina's Public Holidays

• Carnival
  The origin of Carnival comes from the Catholic tradition of "Shrovetide." The Monday and Tuesday falling 47 and 48 days before Easter are designated as public holidays. Festivals and parades are held in cities such as Buenos Aires.
• National Day of Remembrance for Truth and Justice
  This day honors the numerous victims of the 8-year military dictatorship that began with the coup d'état on March 24, 1976. March 24 was established as a day of remembrance to ensure this period of history is never forgotten.
• Day of the Veterans and Fallen of the Malvinas War
  A day to commemorate and pay respects to the fallen soldiers of the Falklands War (Malvinas War) fought against the United Kingdom in 1982.
• Maundy Thursday & Good Friday
  Maundy Thursday commemorates Jesus Christ's Last Supper with his disciples. It is also known as Holy Thursday.
  Good Friday is the Friday immediately preceding Easter Sunday in the Christian calendar, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.
• May Revolution Day
  Commemorates the start of the May Revolution on May 25, 1810, which led to Argentina's independence from Spain.
• Commemoration of General Don Martín Miguel de Güemes
  General Güemes (February 8, 1785 – June 17, 1821) was a prominent hero of the Argentine War of Independence.
  If June 17 falls on a Tuesday or Wednesday, the holiday is moved to the preceding Monday; if it falls on a Thursday or Friday, it is moved to the following Monday.
• National Flag Day (Commemoration of General Manuel Belgrano)
  General Manuel Belgrano (June 3, 1770 – June 20, 1820) was a crucial military leader in the early stages of the Argentine War of Independence and the creator of the National Flag of Argentina.
• Independence Day
  Commemorates the Declaration of Independence issued on July 9, 1816.
• Commemoration of General José de San Martín
  General San Martín (February 25, 1778 – August 17, 1850) was a distinguished military commander who played a pivotal role in the Argentine War of Independence.
• Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity
  Commemorates Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas (October 12, 1492).
• National Sovereignty Day
  Commemorates the "Battle of Vuelta de Obligado" (November 20, 1845) fought by the Argentine Confederation against the Anglo-French navy during the conflict over Montevideo.
  If November 20 falls on a Tuesday or Wednesday, it is moved to the preceding Monday; if it falls between Thursday and Sunday, it is moved to the following Monday.
• Immaculate Conception Day
  A Catholic feast day celebrating the belief that the Virgin Mary was conceived free from original sin in the womb of her mother, Saint Anne, through God's special grace.
