Overview of Public Holidays in Sweden

• Epiphany
  Commemorates the biblical event where the Three Wise Men (Magi), guided by a star, visited Bethlehem to worship the newborn Jesus. This visit symbolizes the manifestation (epiphany) of Jesus Christ to the entire world.
• Good Friday, Easter Eve, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday
  Commemorates the miracle of the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his crucifixion.
  Good Friday is a day to mourn the death of Jesus, while Easter Sunday celebrates his resurrection. The day after Easter Sunday (Easter Monday) is also observed as a public holiday in many countries.
• Ascension Day
  Commemorates the bodily ascension of the resurrected Jesus Christ into heaven in the presence of his disciples. This holiday is celebrated on the 40th day after Easter.
• National Day
  Commemorates June 6, 1523, when Sweden left the Kalmar Union (a personal union with Denmark and Norway) and established the independent Kingdom of Sweden under the Vasa dynasty.
• Whitsun (Pentecost)
  Commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. This event is said to have occurred on the 50th day after Easter.
• Midsummer (midsommar)
  In Sweden, Midsummer is celebrated grandly over two days: Midsummer Eve (Friday) and Midsummer Day (the closest Saturday to the summer solstice).
  Festivities begin during the day on Friday and continue through Saturday.
• All Saints' Day
  In Sweden, All Saints' Day is a movable holiday. It is observed on the Saturday that falls between October 31 and November 6.
