Overview of Italian Public Holidays

Epiphany
Commemorates the visit of the Three Wise Men (Magi) to Bethlehem, guided by a star, to worship the infant Jesus after his birth. This visit is considered a symbol of Jesus' manifestation (epiphany) to all people of the world.
Easter Sunday, Easter Monday
Commemorates the miracle of Jesus Christ rising again on the third day after his crucifixion and execution.
Liberation Day
Commemorates April 25, 1945, near the end of World War II, when major northern cities such as Milan and Turin were liberated from Nazi German occupation.
Republic Day
Commemorates the referendum held on June 2, 1946, in which the Italian people voted to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic.
Assumption of Mary
A Catholic feast day commemorating the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into heaven at the end of her earthly life.
Feast of Saint Francis
Celebrated on October 4 to commemorate Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of Italy. Although this holiday was abolished in 1977, it is reintroduced as a national public holiday starting from 2026, marking the 800th anniversary of his death, to reaffirm the values of peace, fraternity, and environmental protection.
All Saints' Day
A day dedicated to praying for all saints and martyrs.
Immaculate Conception
A feast day commemorating that the Virgin Mary, by a special grace of God, was conceived in the womb of her mother, Saint Anne, free from original sin.
Saint Stephen's Day
Commemorates Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr.

Italy's National Flag & Anthem

National Flag

The national flag of Italy is known as the "Tricolore" (Tricolor). The three colors of green, white, and red represent the land, peace, and the blood of patriots, respectively. They also symbolize "liberty, equality, and fraternity."

National Anthem

The national anthem of Italy is "Il Canto degli Italiani" (The Song of the Italians), also known as "Inno di Mameli" (Mameli's Hymn).
The general meaning of the lyrics calls for unity, becoming soldiers, and defending the homeland at the risk of one's life.
