Overview of Public Holidays in Denmark
Maundy Thursday (3 days before Easter) A holy day commemorating the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples. It is also known as "Holy Thursday" or "洗足木曜日" (Foot-Washing Thursday) from the biblical narrative of Jesus washing his disciples' feet.
Good Friday (2 days before Easter), Easter Sunday, Easter Monday (Day after Easter) Commemorates the miracle of the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his crucifixion. Good Friday is a day to mourn the death of Jesus, while Easter Sunday celebrates his resurrection. The day after Easter Sunday (Easter Monday) is also observed as a public holiday in many countries.
Ascension Day Commemorates the bodily ascension of the resurrected Jesus Christ into heaven in the presence of his disciples. This holiday is celebrated on the 40th day after Easter.
Constitution Day (Customary Holiday) While not an official statutory public holiday, it is widely observed as a customary holiday where government offices and many private companies close. It commemorates the signing of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Denmark on June 5, 1849.
Whit Sunday (Pentecost) Commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. This event is said to have occurred on the 50th day after Easter.
Whit Monday (Day after Pentecost) The day following Pentecost Sunday (Monday) is observed as a public holiday.
