Overview of Brazil's Public Holidays

• Saint Sebastian's Day *Rio de Janeiro only
  Saint Sebastian is the patron saint of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
• Anniversary of the Foundation of São Paulo *City of São Paulo only
  Commemorates the founding of the city of São Paulo on January 25, 1554.
• Carnival & Ash Wednesday (Day after Carnival)
  Although these are not statutory holidays defined by national law, they are observed as holidays through social customs and local ordinances. On Ash Wednesday (the day after Carnival), it is customary for many companies to remain closed in the morning and open for business in the afternoon.
  The origin of Carnival comes from the Catholic tradition of "Shrovetide." The Carnival period runs from the Friday preceding the first day of Lent (Ash Wednesday, a period of abstinence from meat and celebrations) through Tuesday.
• Good Friday
  The Friday immediately preceding Easter Sunday. A holy day commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.
• Tiradentes Day
  Commemorates the anniversary of the death of Tiradentes (August 16, 1746 – April 21, 1792), a heroic figure of the Brazilian revolutionary movement who was executed by the Portuguese colonial government.
• Saint George's Day *Rio de Janeiro only
  A day to celebrate Saint George, a revered patron saint.
• Corpus Christi
  A feast day celebrating the tradition of Jesus sharing bread and wine with his disciples at the Last Supper. It falls on the Thursday 60 days after Easter. While not a statutory national holiday, it is observed as a day off due to social customs and local regulations.
• Constitutionalist Revolution Day *São Paulo only
  Commemorates the constitutionalist movement launched by the citizens of São Paulo, which began on July 9, 1932.
• Independence Day
  Commemorates the declaration of independence made by Prince Pedro, the Emperor of the Empire of Brazil, in São Paulo on September 7, 1822.
• Our Lady of Aparecida Day
  A day celebrating "Our Lady of Aparecida," the patroness of Brazil. Our Lady of Aparecida refers to a dark wooden statue of the Virgin Mary that was pulled from the Paraíba River in São Paulo in 1717.
• All Souls' Day
  A day dedicated to offering prayers for all the deceased. It is a feast day in the Catholic Church.
• Proclamation of the Republic
  Commemorates the overthrow of Emperor Pedro II by a military coup d'état and the subsequent proclamation of the republic on November 15, 1889.
• Black Awareness Day
  A day dedicated to reflecting on racial discrimination in Brazil. It commemorates the anniversary of the death of Zumbi dos Palmares, an abolitionist leader who died on November 20, 1695. It has been a national statutory holiday since 2024.
• Evangelical Day *Brasília only
  A holiday dedicated to Protestant Christianity.

National Flag & National Anthem of Brazil

National Flag

The national flag of Brazil is known as "Auriverde" (The Gold and Green). The blue celestial globe depicts the night sky over Rio de Janeiro at 8:30 AM on November 15, 1889—the day the Republic was proclaimed—and features 27 stars. The motto inscribed on the band reads "Ordem e Progresso" (Order and Progress).
