Overview of Thailand's Public Holidays

• Makha Bucha Day
  A holiday commemorating the miraculous event where 1,250 of Buddha's disciples gathered spontaneously without prior appointment to hear his sermon.
• Chakri Memorial Day
  Commemorates the establishment of the Chakri Dynasty (the current ruling dynasty) by King Rama I in 1782, during which Bangkok was designated as the capital.
• Songkran Festival (Thai New Year)
  The traditional Thai New Year based on the solar calendar. It is currently fixed from April 13th to April 15th.
• Coronation Day
  Commemorates the coronation of the current monarch, King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X).
• Royal Ploughing Ceremony
  The date of this ancient ritual is determined annually by royal astrologers (usually in mid-May).
• Visakha Bucha Day
  The most sacred Buddhist holiday, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing (Nirvana) of the Buddha (15th day of the waxing moon in the 6th Thai lunar month).
• H.M. Queen Suthida's Birthday
  Celebrates the birthday of the current Queen of Thailand.
• Asahna Bucha Day
  Commemorates the day the Buddha delivered his first sermon to his first five disciples.
• Khao Phansa (Buddhist Lent)
  Marks the beginning of the three-month rain retreat for Buddhist monks (observed as a holiday by government agencies only).
• H.M. King Vajiralongkorn's Birthday
  Celebrates the birthday of the current monarch, King Maha Vajiralongkorn.
• H.M. Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother's Birthday
  Celebrates the birthday of Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother. This day is also observed as National Mother's Day.
• King Bhumibol Adulyadej Memorial Day
  Commemorates the passing of the late King Rama IX (King Bhumibol Adulyadej).
• Chulalongkorn Day
  Commemorates the passing of King Rama V (King Chulalongkorn) on October 23, 1910, who is revered for his modernization of Thailand.
• King Bhumibol Adulyadej's Birthday
  Commemorates the birth of the late King Rama IX on December 5, 1927. This day is also celebrated as National Father's Day.
• Constitution Day
  Commemorates the promulgation of Thailand's first permanent constitution on December 10, 1932.

The national flag of Thailand is known as "Thong Trairong" (Tricolor flag). The five horizontal stripes represent three elements: red for the nation and its people, white for religion, and blue for the monarchy.
